In December 1977 the Künstlerhaus Hamburg e.V. was founded in the Weidenallee. The guiding idea was to create a place that would enable the unity of living, artistic work and exhibition. What was new was that the artists of all genders themselves managed the house, assigned the studios and organized exhibitions. In 2003, nine of the artists moved into the large building of the former hairdressing institute in Arnoldstraße in Altona. Further artists were admitted as members to the association. The illustration center was added. The FRISE was born.
